    JEM Students Impress at Annual Society of North American Goldsmiths Conference

    The Society of North American Goldsmiths (SNAG) is the largest professional metalsmith organization and every year, it hosts a conference to invite the who’s who from the jewelry and metal arts industry.

    The professionals, trailblazers, educators and rising up-and-comers attending maintains a conference gold standard and this past May, the School of Jewelry & Metal Arts (JEM) from Academy of Art University joined in on the fun at the conference in Portland, Oregon.

    Collaboration Born From Shared Experience

    If Leonardo da Vinci was right when he said, “Painting is poetry that is seen rather than felt, and poetry is painting that is felt rather than seen,” then Sam Giuliano and Haley Jakobson’s fiery new anthology, Write Like Prayers, covers both fronts of that emotional spectrum. Giuliano, an alumna of Academy of Art University’s School of Illustration, is responsible for the book’s beautiful, muted artwork.

    “As young women in our respective industries, we sought the opportunity to develop our own narrative and cultivate a creative work that embodied the female millennial voice,” Giuliano explained. “Combining storytelling illustration with raw, unfiltered poetry, Write Like Prayers is a bedtime story for your twenties.”

    The Icelandic word for “together” fittingly serves as the tagline for an Icelandic National Soccer Team Coca-Cola 2018 World Cup advertising campaign that reunited Academy of Art University Men’s Soccer alumni Thorvaldur “Thobbi” Sveinsson and Jon “Jay” Eldon. Working with Iceland-based ad agency Maurar and Avista, Sveinsson’s design company, the ART U School of Web Design & New Media graduates exemplified the country’s collaborative nature in producing a promotional website paired with a commercial that went viral.

    A New Home for Young & Hungry

    Young & Hungry, the student-run advertising agency you can take as a class, has a new dedicated space in the Cannery Building at Fisherman’s Wharf. 

    Y&H, as it’s affectionately known by students who take the class, is modeled after a modern advertising agency and students work with real clients, with real deadlines. “Students often comment that it’s more like going to work than it is going to school,” said School of Advertising Associate Director and Executive Creative Director of Y&H Jim Wojtowicz. “Which is great, because that means there is an added level of learning happening that goes beyond a normal class.”

    Navigating the Digital World

    To call Kristi Pelzel ambitious is an understatement. Since moving to San Francisco, the Texas native and online graduate from the Academy of Art University’s School of Communications & Media Technologies (COM) has set herself on a journey to learn anything and everything she can to advance her career. She completed her B.A. this past spring (which took her three years) and has since embarked on high-level achievements, including a stint in the U.S. government and being recently named Director of Multimedia at Georgetown’s news outlet and academic blog, gnovis. We sat down with Pelzel and learned more about her motivations, aspirations and resolve.
