On March 18, the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) Northern California Chapter hosted its Honor Awards at the beautiful Fox Theater in Oakland.  Every year they aim to encourage new ideas and techniques in the design and furnishing of interior spaces. The Honor Awards are open to design firms in Northern California and host a student honor award portion at each year’s event. The top five student projects are selected, and the students are brought on stage at the event and their place and prize is revealed.

This year School of Interior Design & Architecture B.F.A. student Jake Bliss submitted his project for his senior commercial design class with instructor Serena Zanello. The project, which also received an honorable mention at the Steelcase NEXT 2nd Annual Design competition in the Fall 2014 semester, won a third place award at the IIDA Honor Awards, along with a cash prize. His work was showcased in front of an audience of several hundred design professionals eager to hire emerging talent and Bliss had the opportunity to speak in front of his future employers about his project.

Recognition like this from the design industry is validating and helps to confirm that our graduating seniors are ready to make the transition from school to the professional world.

“I was a nervous wreck before going on stage and giving my acceptance speech,” said Bliss. “Once I got up to the mic, I thanked Starbucks for keeping me awake for all of the sleepless nights and asked which firm wanted to hang the award on their wall, which made the audience cheer. It’s a great feeling receiving such an honor so close to graduation.”

“I’m so proud to see Jake being honored by IIDA, he has been an outstanding role model for current students,” said instructor Agustin Sanders. “While we are sad to see him graduate, we are also excited for this new chapter in his professional life to start. Congratulations!”
