Legendary writer/director John Waters stopped by Academy of Art University to take an informal tour of the School of Motion Pictures and Television with Executive Director James Egan and MPTV students.
An independent filmmaker and iconoclast, Waters has been a pioneering figure in counterculture cinema since the mid-sixties. The subversive nature of his work captures the grotesque elements of our culture and elevates them into dazzlingly original satire of the American mainstream. His films Pink Flamingos and Polyester are considered cult classics, while his commercial breakthrough Hairspray is now a household name.
Waters was very impressed with the MPTV studios. He was even more impressed after viewing student finalist films from this year’s Media Awards. Waters and Egan most recently collaborated on the book Interviews: John Waters, which was part of the prestigious Conversations with Filmmakers series.
