On Monday, Nov. 23, the San Francisco Police Officers Association, the San Francisco Police Department and Academy of Art University joined forces to put on a fabulous Thanksgiving holiday dinner for the wonderful and courageous families at UCSF Family House.

Under the direction of the great Edie Lewis and through the generosity of POA President Marty Halloran, Academy of Art University Campus Safety Director Mike Petricca and Academy of Art University President Dr. Elisa Stephens, six volunteers pulled out all the stops to shop, clean, cook and prepare a wonderful family dinner for close to 40 people at the Family House 10th Avenue location in the Inner Sunset District.

The SFPOA’s involvement with Family House started back in 2008 when then POA President Gary Delagnes wanted to do more for Family House in addition to the monthly visits to visit sick children and families at UCSF. The first event was such a great success that the POA and the SFPD have turned this into an annual event.

The university became involved with Family House in 2012 when Patrol Supervisor Kevin Martin began working with the Academy. Over the past three years, members of the Academy’s Campus Safety Department have been very enthusiastic to participate in this most worthwhile cause.

The UCSF Koret Family House provides housing and great care for families with children who are battling cancer and other life threatening diseases. Taking the reins from Martin and Patrick Cadigan (retired SFPD), Lewis has incorporated the help of many officers including a steady stream of Academy recruits to get involved and see a brighter side of police work which is very welcomed and appreciated by the great staff at Family House led by Volunteer Director Greg Mora.

The SFPD, POA and the Academy are proud and honored to be associated with Family House, and we hope to keep our trusted relationship for many years to come.
