Welcome Academy of Art University students to the beginning of the Fall 2016 semester!

For new students, it’s the beginning of your journey at the Academy, and for continuing students, welcome back as you pursue your craft with passion and enthusiasm. You are all now and forever will be the Academy’s Urban Knights!

I am the new Director of Athletics at the Academy. I come to the Academy with 26 years of college athletics experience at Fairfield University, the Pacific-10 (now Pac-12) Conference, Ohio State University, and most recently, the University of Hawaii. I am very excited to come back to San Francisco to lead ART U Athletics.

The Academy is a very unique educational institution. Out of 1,281 institutions, we are the only art school in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). n II intercollegiate sport teams and 225 ART U student-athletes.

Our sports are baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field and volleyball. And not only do we compete...we also win!

In just a short eight-year existence, your women’s track & field team has won, not one, but two Division II National Championships. We have also won numerous PacWest Conference Championships in several sports, and women’s basketball has won three conference titles.

However, the biggest and most important piece for Athletics is you. We want to see you out at our games rooting on your fellow student-athletes. Our women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s soccer, and cross country teams are in action this fall. Be sure to check out our upcoming athletic events at www.ARTUAthletics.com.

You can also follow ART U Athletics on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook for all upcoming events! #BeArtistBeAthlete #Art School

Starting this fall, ART U Athletics is working to bring something new and very exciting for all Academy of Art students—student intramural sport activities.

ART U Athletics is collaborating closely with the Schools of Game Development and Multimedia Communications to bring you eSports. We will hold six video gaming tournaments this fall, from late September to early December, just for Academy of Art students here on campus and for our online students as well. The competitive gaming arena will be housed at 180 New Montgomery on the 7th Floor.

Our second activity will be table tennis (ping pong) intramurals. It’s your chance to bring out your prized paddles and compete against your fellow students.

We will be announcing details for eSports and table tennis hours and location very soon.

We also would like Academy student feedback. Athletics will be distributing a survey very soon via email to all students to let us know what other intramural activities you would be interested in here at the Academy.

These are exciting times at the Academy, and we hope that more students will get involved with Athletics and student intramurals.

Welcome back, pursue your passions and good luck to all of you Urban Knights.

Yours in sport,

Ben Jay
